You can label your campaigns, ad sets, and ads using tags to assign additional context to them. By labeling items with one or more informative and distinctive tags, you can more easily organize, search, analyze, and report on your content on the Smartly.io platform.
You can use tags in many ways. Here are a few examples:
- Tag visual attributes for ads, such as creative concepts, dominant colors, or feature products.
- Tag target markets, audience types, or attributes for ad sets.
- Tag key campaign attributes, highlight best-performing ones, or flag issues for others to review.
Assign tags to your campaign content
In the Campaigns view, you can view and change the tags assigned to campaigns, ad sets, and ads. If you haven't created any tags yet or you need new ones, you can also create tags from there.
Before you start, make sure that the Tags column or the relevant Tag category columns have been added to your reporting view. This makes it easier for you to see assigned tags.
When making changes to tags in the Campaigns view, you can assign tags, remove existing ones, and find tags and replace them with others.

To assign new or existing tags to content:
- Select the campaigns, ad sets, or ads that you want to tag.
- Select Edit > Tags > then either Campaigns, Ad Sets, or Ads.

Use tags in reporting
In the Campaigns view, you can use tags in two ways: you can add relevant tag metrics as columns and see them visualized next to your objects and you can add the same metrics as dimensions.
Use tags as a column
Adding the Tags column or one of the Tag Category metrics as a column is a good way to visualize relevant tags next to campaigns, ad sets, and ads. For instructions, see how to define the columns displayed in the Campaigns view.
If you use tagging, we recommend that you add the Tags column to your reports. This way you can see which tags are assigned to an item and you can also see your tagging changes right away.
In the column, tags are only displayed next to the item that they're tagged with. For example, if you have only tagged an ad, you won't see any tags for the parent ad set or campaign. This means that if you use multiple dimensions in your reporting view, you may need to expand some of the items to see the tags.
Use tags as a dimension
Adding Tags or one of the Tag Category metrics as a primary dimension can help you visualize campaign performance. For instructions, see how to define the dimensions for the Campaigns view.
If you frequently tag items on the Smartly.io platform, you can group campaign, ad set, or ad insights with the help of tags.
As a dimension, tags are displayed from all child campaign levels. For example, if you have tagged an ad, you will see the tag in the results also when you have campaigns or ad sets as another dimension.
Tag dimensions can help you uncover performance insights you wouldn't otherwise see. Tag creative attributes to see how they're are affecting your performance, analyze various target groups, or group items by promotion type.
Filter content using a tag or a set of tags
Filter to tags to see relevant campaigns, ad sets, or ads easily. To do that, open the Filters menu in the Campaigns view and select Tags or one of the Tag Category metrics. Start to type tags you want to filter to, then select one of the following operators:
- Contains any: the results should contain at least one of the specified tags.
- Contains all: the results should contain all of the specified tags.
- The tags can be on different hierarchy levels, for example one tag on the campaign level and another on the ad set level.
- Contains none: the results should not contain any of the specified tags.
- Is empty: the results are not tagged with any tag, on any hierarchy level.
- Is not empty: the results are at least tagged with one tag, on any hierarchy level. Use this setting to easily filter to campaigns, ad sets, and ads that are tagged.
Alternatively, if want to search for tagged items on a specific level, you can use Campaign Tags, Ad Set Tags, or Ad Tags as your filtering metric.
Additional ways to use tags
Here are some examples of how you can use tags to the fullest on the Smartly.io platform:
- If you're testing various creative concepts, you can tag your items accordingly and add the relevant tag categories as dimensions to visualize performance.
- You can extend or even replace some of your naming conventions with the help of tags. For every attribute type (such as the customer journey step), create one tag category and define the attributes as tags.
- Create "Review Needed" and "Review Done" tags to work with colleagues. You can add "Review Needed" to the items that need a second pair of eyes, and others can customize a reporting view to only show those items. After reviewing, they can easily change the tag to "Review Done" to indicate to you that the review has been completed.
- Not sure which message on the image performs the best? You can create image copy tags and visualize the various performance results based on the copies.
